When starting a new activity or meeting new people to you feel the need to explain your child?

I find I want to explain all of her oddities whenever we are starting something new - I think it is my over-protective instinct - but I worry that I am creating pre-conceived opinions and not allowing her to establish her own identity. What do you do?
