Should I allow my son to participate with the Talented and Gifted program?

Josh (who has Asperger's) has been recommended for the Talented and Gifted program at school. I'm thinking about putting him in the program, but I'm not sure. Does anyone have any experience with this? My daughter was in it and did well, but she is "typical" so she doesn't have the issues that Josh does.

Josh finished his first year the TAG program and did extremely well. Turns out it was a good thing when the school enrolled him in it (even though I had said not to, some sort of communication error on their part). It challenged him and he really enjoyed it. Fortunately he had teachers this past year who had a background jn working with children like Joshua so they knew how to help him and lostened to whar I was saying. Hopefully 7th grade goes as well as 6th grade did.

I would do it. Anything that helps him to learn, get a challenge, and feel good about his accomplishments would be beneficial.

That's probably what I'm going to have to do. I think at this point that I will put him in the class with the stipulation that I can pull him out if it is too much for him.

Could you talk to the coordinator to see what kind of accommodations they offer to "twice exceptional" students? I know families with 2E kids who have left GATE programs to homeschool because the program was designed for the typical Type A overachiever teacher's pet gifted student and wasn't willing to work with the 2E child.
