blowing nose?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

What creative or zany ways can you use to teach a 4yo non verbal, non mimicking, little boy to blow his nose, or to pick his nose even? he has crying fits for up to twenty minutes to relieve the tension in his throat and sinuses just to get the boogers out. He refuses and fights against saline and aspirators.

I use eucalyptus oil for my son...I put a drop in his shirt and around his room while he sleeps as well as a humidifier!

The only thing that worked for my son was, one day we were watching "the polar express" movie together and there is a scene in the middle of the movie involving a caribou exhaling through his nostrils in the face of a conductor, mouth closed. I said to him, "that s how you blow your nose!" That set off the bell in his head - ever since. When I want him to blow his nose, I hold the hanky for him and say "blow, like the caribou". Works every time.

my son is 13 and i still can't get him to learn. On his own as a younger kid, he decided that since q-tips cleaned his ears they would also clean his nose. I am always with him to be sure he doesn't push it in too far but he very gently cleans his nostrils out with a qtip. Great for when we're at home but i'd still love some help teaching him to blow for when he's at school or wherever.

I have the same problem with my son he is 2, but non verbal and non mimicking. He will have anxiety attacks and hyperventilate because he can't breath. The only thing I have found to help is a Vicks rub or peppermint oil put under his nose or on his chest. Sometimes he will let me massage the bridge of his nose. If you find or hear of any other ways I would love to know also.
