I’m trying to get help for my 13 year old son that was diagnosed with high functioning autism in September 2012. The school psychologist gave us the diagnosis and set up his IEP but now we’re left on our own to figure out how to deal with this. I don’t know how to get him the help he needs outside of school. None of the local agencies will treat him because he’s under 14, one agency won’t accept private insurance and he’s not on Medicaid yet, another won’t even talk to me on the phone about… read more

Members rallied around a parent struggling to find behavioral therapy for their 13-year-old son with high-functioning autism who was experiencing severe anxiety, school refusal, and regression despite seeing two therapists weekly. Several members offered practical strategies, including applying for Social Security disability to gain secondary insurance coverage that may fund otherwise inaccessible services, seeking second opinions from specialized clinics even if they require travel, exploring dietary triggers common in autism (particularly gluten), and contacting state advocacy offices that can provide training and support in navigating complex systems. A recurring theme was the frustrating reality that parents must persistently fight insurance companies, school districts, and waiting lists to secure appropriate care, with members emphasizing the importance of not giving up and considering professional advocates who understand the rules and can help secure services that parents often cannot access alone.

ttalucci- There is a book called Healing and Preventing Autism written by Jenny McCarthy and Jerry Kartzinal,M.D. It goes in detail about what may help. Now I know every state is different but you should look at the disability act in you r state. Here in Va. they have to provide Special Ed to all the kids with disability. The school system were I live has to pay for and send my child to a day school the next county over. I hope that this information helps I know that it can be hard dealing with school system.

I would contact your state Advocacy office. Ours in South Dakota has truly been a blessing. They have provided trainings that have helped us be better advocates for our son.

I know that Stephen's hormones made him go through the roof with his active agressive behavior. Starting to hit me and curse at me and tell me that he hates me an also I am fired. He still has his moods. I think he needs to see one but his doctor will not refer me because he is afraid that it would cause more harm than good.

That is what the Klingberg Clinic told me it would take that long but Stephen got in there in a bout 6 weeks. So it was pretty quick.

You many want to look in to what he is eating. My daughter had anxiety attacks before going to school too. Some food don't sit well with ASD kids.
