Members shared mixed experiences with Risperdal for anxiety and related conditions in their children, with several reporting significant improvements in emotional regulation, focus, and behavior, while others noted it provided limited benefit. Many parents emphasized the importance of closely monitoring for side effects, particularly weight gain and hormonal changes in boys, with some finding the side effects outweighed the benefits and others seeing positive results without major concerns. A recurring theme was the relief parents felt when finding a medication that worked after struggling with previous options, balanced with vigilant attention to their child's physical and emotional wellbeing throughout treatment.

my son was switched to this 3 months ago and the improvement is astounding! His teachers, friends and our family have all noticed how much better he is handling his emotions. He takes 5 mg in the morning and another 5 at night. He has had a little bit of weight gain but he's 13 and going through many growth spurts so i'm not sure what to attribute it to. He certainly didn't get fat, he was just thin and has started to fill out. That could just be typical teenage growth so i'm not really concerned. Just making sure he eats right and stays active. Good luck to you!

good luck Heidi! My son was on Trileptal and it was horrible. He became very verbally and physically abusive towards me and threatened suicide. He also started cutting himself. He was hospitalized after a 911 call and while he was in, they switched him to Risperdone (generic form of Risperdal). The change was amazing with no noticable side effects. I hope you have the same results we've seen.

I was just going to post a question about Risperdal, glad I did a quick search! My son is starting it tonight, he is 4 and has PDD-NOS with anxiety (common!). His developmental pediatrician is having him try the Risperdal to help with his anxiety and his inability to focus. We just tried Celexa and the 1/4 tsp did nothing and his doctor had me up it to 1/2 tsp. Once we did that he got worse and he had us take him off it. So, hoping the Risperdal helps. The side effects (muscle spasms and weight gain) do concern us, but we will watch him closely, as always.
