Is it just me or is autism a bad word in spanish bc no one writes about it or talks about it as much as they should?

I haven't been able to find any good books on autism in spanish for my spanish speaking only family members. I've seen some but they were ridiculous and I didn't expect them to read them and understand the books. it took several months for some in the family to accept it and somewhat understand it, but at least they got there and I'm lucky they did. However, I've heard of families literally ignoring the symptoms and saying, "Eso es nada. El/Ella se desarolla de eso y habla cuando es su tiempo"… read more

Yeah it looks like it isn't a cultural thing just an ignorant thing.

Our doctors and therapists have said it constantly. My daughter spends hours crawling around and drinking milk from a bowl on the floor. Therapist's response? "Oh, that's perfectly normal. She just has an active imagination." She says that to practically EVERYthing, no matter how unusual. Our doctor said it about our son no speaking by age 2.

I think people are just really afraid of labeling young children, and don't realize that labels can help us to know where to look for help.

my family, caucasian, says the same things so i don't think it's cultural. I think it's that we don't want to admit something is wrong or different. Also, when we were kids these "syndromes" didn't exist. Kids were hyper, not ADHD. My family just thinks my son has tantrums because he's been too spoiled growing up. His own father doesn't think he's "really autistic" because he's high funtioning, made honor roll, etc. He just thinks his behavior needs adjusting and his way is to threaten and intimidate him into acting his age, so to speak.
