Anyone else interested in developing well-run, creative housing option for our sons/daughters when they reach age 18?
We are in southern Alameda County in California. I am looking for others to explore possible options. Possibly using a supportive living model but with some aspects from group homes and add in clearly defined parent involvement. If interested or if you have done this elsewhere, it would be great to hear from you!
Hi Irene! Sorry for the late response. The passt few weeks were crazy. Del Webb is a company specializing in retirement communities. They're all over the U.S. I'll take another shot at finding the place in South Carolina. I think it's still in the development stage.
thanks! What is Del Webb? I couldn't find Hope Garden in SC online. Is there another name?
Found another one . It's Hope Garden (s) in South Carolina. Planned community like Del Webb with an intergenerational component. Adultbchildren can live with parents, group housing or apartment. They "pay it forward" by helping the older residents and working on site. The goal,is to have a real supportive community so the children will always have a home and people who care about them after Mom and Dad are gone. The one caveat is the residents can't have major behavioral, issues.
Thanks for the lead. I'll check them out. There are quite a few exciting projects being developed in various parts of the country.
Check out the Glennwood Foundation in Laguna Beach A group of parents started fundraising to build a home for adults on the spectrum and other disabilities. The residents must be high functioning, but it's a place to start.
I have 1 son with autism, in your own experience what are the chances of having a second child on the Spectrum?
What have you found effective for educating the regular ed. educators?
