Should I continue with ABA ,speech, OT therapy if he going to lose his services at school??

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
San Antonio, TX

My son is very high functioning, very verbal, and highly intelligent. But he has trouble with transitions, social skills, pragmatic language, lots of stimming and head banging. He has been with a ABA therapist,OT therapist for over a year and recently a speech therapist to control his temper outburst and pragmatic language. He has made a lot of progress and they keep telling me he can learn these social skills and be taught to handle his transitions
The school will retest him for Autism next… read more

I would if you can afford it but I also would not go with the schools evaluations either. I would have them done outside with a neurologist and have a new IEP meeting as soon as you can.y children both got summer assistance because they needed it and the school paid for it.

You probably already signed off agreeing to allow speech to be taken away. Please keep in mind that some of these challenges cannot be seen in a written assessment, like transitioning.Data should always be collected when change is to take place and you should always request this prior to giving up services if your not sure it is the right thing to do. Always keep in mind that federal law supercedes state and district and the purpose of the federal law is to ensure that your child can access futher education, employment and independent living. If he cannot transition well, has outbursts, and challenages with pragmatic language, obviously he will not be able to accomplish the things he is entitled to. You should speak with your district special ed supervisor.

You have a right to call an IEP meeting at anytime for has many times you want. Ask your outside speech therapist to attend the meeting if possible. If you are having problems call your district if its a public school.

When Drake started the PPCD the school tested him but only listed him as non categorical and now they say they must retest him because at 6 years their is no longer a non categorical label. And at our ARD meeting even with an advocate there they cut back his speech saying he had meet his goals, and only new one goal to recognize facial emotions for next year. Yet a week ago the outside speech path recognized extreme dificulties in pragmatic language.
If the school speech pathologist does not recognized his deficiencies will he get proper diagnosis??

Under IDEA you have the right to independent evaluations at the school district's cost. Don't let them take away his IEP without a fight.
