@A MyAutismTeam Member...Joey has severe apraxia of speech as well as dystharia(low oral motor muscle tone)
He has been with the same speech therapist for 1.5 years and using horns, whistles to strengthen his muscles as well as different levels of straws to strengthen.
As for the apraxia Joey has always had difficulty retrieving and processing most information.
Initially we broke words down to the simplest approximation..for example apple would just be "a" and we would take it..if he was even trying he was praised, eventually and it has taken a long time he can say "a pp a" .most people still have a really hard time understanding him and normally he has to be prompted by me to say most words.
I say just try to get the best approximation of the word and eventually you can shape the word, but it's a lot of repetition and saying the word over and over again.. Also, for Joey it's frustrating because deceptively he can identify and understand most of what I'm saying, he just can not express it:(. There is this app someone just told me about(kinda like an AAC device) and I have been debating it I just don't want Joey to become dependent on it and not try to use his words.
Any other questions,please ask.

@A MyAutismTeam Member.. No Joey is not mainstreamed at all. He is in a learning disabled classroom.

I'm sorry maybe Joey is in mainstream education. Sorry for the error if so.
