Does anyone have issues with high functioning teens and text messaging?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have a 17 year old high functioning son who is constantly deleting some of his text messages on his phone when he knows he is not allowed to. Many of his texts have been inappropriate. My sister and I spent a lot of time last night comparing the texts on his phone with the texts on the online cell phone web site and many of the texts were deleted off his phone (even ones sent and received by me). I would like to know if this is just typical teenage behavior or is it a symptom of Autism? Thanks… read more

I would say typical teen age behavior. There is a Web site called teen safe we downloaded on our sons phone. It allows you to see all the texts and shows witch were deleted. This links directly to your phone. We told my son it was on there so he will not feel like we did it behind his back and it has kept him from deleting anything and keeps him accountable for his activity on the internet.

I'd say typical teenager thing also. In our house it is my NT teenage daughter who typically deletes her texts while my AS son probably only deletes when the phone is too full to allow more.

it's a teenager thing... my 16 year old, typically developing daughter does the same thing. think about all the things you said when you were that age you didn't want your parents to know about... technology is a double-edged sword!

Hum I have a 15 year old that did the same thing for a while she is aspergers I first told her that we had open communication around here and if she continued to delete I would take the phone. She tested I took and she got better still forgets sometimes have to reinforce think that is maybe the autism? lol
