I live in Texas and need help with my 22 year old son. He is a high functioning ASD young man. Graduated High School but does not make the best decisions and trusts what every one tells him. We were told we might need to get guardianship of some kind over him. Don't know where to start and what to do. We have a very limited amount of funds since 2 children are in college right now and my son is trying to get into a trade/community college program. Where do I go? What kind of guardianship do we… read more
We have the same situation with our daughter, she isn't of legal age yet, but it's something we are talking to her therapist about. I would start by contacting the clerk of court. They are usually very helpful and can point you in the right direction. Do you think he will need government services as well? If so you could contact the Social Services agency in your area. Family Lawyers are a good starting point as well. Most will give you free advise on where to begin.
I hope that helps if you need something more specific, let me know.
I also wanted to say that in my state if the person you are trying to get guardianship of has limited means you can ask the court to waive thd filing fees.
It's harder to get guardianship after they are legal adults. My son is 17 and we are starting the process now. I would contact an attorney. There is full guardianship, medical or financial.

Thank you so much for the information. My son graduated and my high school. I worked at the same school. It has been very little help. I have been so stressed with trying to get everything set up. I appreciate your willingness to help.
I have to ask what does your school district offers? Do you have an official medical diagnosis? Are you seeing specialist - aka: Therapist specialized in ASD? Does he have an IEP? They will tell you that in college this doesn't do much, but it does. You may not get the services you can in High School, but they will recognize that he will need more specialized attention and assistance. I'm not sure where you live but we have a WONDERFUL group in my area and I bet if you called their office someone there would be able to help you find a group in your area that will be just as good.
I have known about my children's Autism from the time my oldest was 4yrs old. My 2nd child has ADHD/Bi-polar and we've known about it from the time he was 2yrs old. My youngest son was diagnosed at the age of 5yrs old ... but my daughter, we couldn't get ANYONE to make a clear diagnosis on her until she was 16yrs old. They are all now 19, 17, 16, & 10. I'm sure you can guess that my daughter was just recently diagnosed. Every day we look back and wonder what we could have done differently.
I tell my kids all the time, things are meant to happen in their own way. Maybe for your son, he is getting diagnosed now because now is the time that all of you are better equipped to help him, handle what he needs, and understand.
