I'm asking on behalf of a friend who is overwhelmed with a newborn, etc. Her 3 year old was in Early Intervention for a month before he turned 3. She was told he automatically qualifies for special needs pre k in her school district also but has not heard back yet from school. He turned 3 early in August and has been leaving multiple messages with school but to no avail
We live in NJ so I'm not familiar with Connecticut system, but my son had to test into the school program after 3 months… read more
I live in ct and went thru the process w my now seven yr old. We have birth to 3 here for EI services and they should help w everything. We have what's called ECAT and u need to call them. Then we had appt w district before his 3rd b day. They do Evals and stuff there before they decide whether he qualifies for anything. The EI people came w us. I also brought the med diagnosis and all other Evals I had done for him. I am in new haven and could help w any questions. We just went thru mediation and got priv placement. Nothing is easy. Oh, he started pre k on his third b day as is normal here. Doesn't met year when it is. U can give her my info if want or ask me anything else as I ve been dealing w ct spec ed for yrs. know laws, advocates, services, etc. By the way, she has a great friend in you!
Thanks CrimsonWife. I think she received bad info. from someone on this. I will let her know.
I tried to explain its probably same process in NJ, but she seemed to think it was automatic for his enrollment into the school.
She needs to send a certified letter to the district requesting an evaluation. Only a request in writing starts the 60 day clock running for doing the eval. Eligibility for EI does not automatically mean that the child will be found eligible for an IEP, but a denial of eligibility with a time lag of only 1 month probably wouldn't hold up in a due process hearing.
Also EI in Nj now has to send request for school district to test your child. Same for CT or do you have to do yourself?
