A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Quick question--I've seen a lot of things here about Autism Speaks being great for info but not much else. What sites/organizations do you guys like? I Googled "autism organizations" but don't know which are good and which are crappy, lol...thanks :)

How Do You Deal With A 12yo Who Steals And Lies And Has No Self Control And Doesn't Seem To Recognize Right From Wrong?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son is exceptionally good at sneaking things in his pockets even when we're close by. He then says his brain told him to. He as no control of his thoughts or impulses and rarely understands what he's done is wrong. We've tried all kinds of instructions and disciplines and nothing changes the behavior.

Very likely, he doesn't understand perspective-taking and, hence, cannot understand the weight of his behaviors ... Seek CBT and a speech therapist for advise.

Is It Common For Someone On The Spectrum To Steal?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I've read that stealing is not something that goes along with autism. However, I've researched this a little bit and have found that many people ask questions about it. My grandson doesn't "steal" in the truest sense of the word, but he does take things that aren't his, like pencils, scissors, and other random items. When asked, he as no real answer about why he does it.

Maybe he doesn't understand boundaries, social-perspective and discriminates between what's his and what's not. Or it could be an act of impulse. Either way you can reach out to your ABA provider for… read more

My Autistic 5 YO Is Doing Great In A Mainstream Classroom, But I Worry About Coming Years. Does Anyone Have Any Insight To Share?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Even before diagnosis we noticed some behaviors that became increasingly uncommon for a child his age as he grew. As I noticed issues (loud sounds, poor eye contact, difficulty adjusting to changes in routine, repetitive movements, struggle with recognizing social cues/emotions) I would figure out ways to help him navigate whatever he was struggling with. I would warn him when I knew a loud sound was coming, tell him repeatedly about any upcoming change in schedule, etc. He's very smart, but if… read more

School Issues.....
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Has anyone ever filed a complaint with their state's board of education because the district did not resolve the issue? My issue is my son's school has not had a speech therapist on staff all year. I found out the one from last year is still in the district but in a different position...... Did the issue get resolved after this? Was your child treated differently at school after and during complaint process?
