Looking For A Better School For Autistic Nonverbal Talented Child
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hello, Parents and Providers
Let me say first a little about us. I have an almost 4 y.o autistic child who is considered to be nonverbal, but can count to 20, sings a lot of nursery rhymes (has a good memory) , knows alphabet, can read short words out of 3-4 letters and has a great sense of rhythm in music. My child was diagnosed with autism disorder ( wide spectrum) in early 2013. We are attending a 2nd year of pre-k where she is bored and everyday primitive routine and low grade public… read more

We have the insurance through my husbands work, but we might have to buy a plan for him if my husband changes jobs. We are in Illinois. A fully funded Blue Cross PPO seems to be the best here. You can now buy private insurance for your child only. You can buy in November.(it might not start until January but check) Make sure that the plan covers Autism. Is there another theuputic day school option or option with your district? Can you try the ABA option? If it is a good company they will probably work at your child's level. We moved to the suburbs to be in a school district with more options. They are willing to pay for private therapeutic school. We were discouraged because that school was not a good fit. Low expectations. His city preschool used pecs with him and he was already verbal. They could not afford an aid. You can also do therapy on the side. Without insurance you can probably get private Speech, OT and PT.(hospitals usually take State coverage ) The therapist might have to add a diagnose like receptive/Expressive language disorder and you need a Dr. referral. We are thinking about adding a DIR floor Time program which is mostly parent delivered.(weekly trainer) If you have a hospital with an autism program near you they often treat kids without insurance or offer grants. You would probably still need school. When we went that route, the therapy was part time and parent delivered.

Where are you located? We are in Charlotte and JJ goes to Cyzner Institute a therapeutic day school. You have the option of all day ABA (cost more) or school interspersed with ABA, Speech, etc.. But we don't have insurance to cover. Did you buy a private insurance (vs. through your work)? If so, any details would be appreciated. Thanks!

Where do you live? Do you have good insurance? Our 6 year old was sent to therapeutic placement through our district. It was not working out. We are using our insurance to send him to a full time ABA center based program with group time. it is set up like a classroom with the same kids all year. Can you buy the insurance if not? We are going to look at some therapeutic school district programs because it would be nice to use the school services. Can you get therapeutic placement or does your district have different kinds of programs?
