Potty Training
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My daughter who has ASD is 2 and A half, she is a very big 2 and a half year old. Not really fat just tall and solid but none the less out growing a size six diaper (they are barely strapping) so I guess I have several questions here..... how old were some of your children on the spectrum when they potty trained? What were some of their challenges and things you found that worked well for them? And if potty training isn’t an option has anyone had to order diapers bigger than a 6 and where is the… read more

Peeing While Standing
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi, my Son is now almost 4 y/o. He was potty trained 3 mos ago, but when he started potty training, ABA taught him to take all lower body dressing off , and done sitting on toilet.
He learned that , but he is not wanting to try in standing , or just put pants/ briefs halfway down. I understand bec he is used to taking them all off.
How can I teach him to do it standing, or train him not to take pants/ briefs all the way?
Pls share some ideas. Thanks.

Non-verbal Classic Autistic 4 Year Old Still Not Potty Trained, What Else Can We Try?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

This is a long question but very necessary to understand our potty training dilemma, Please help!!!

My daughter has Classic Autism, is non-verbal, and turns 5 in April. She is still not potty trained and we're already getting so much grief from the school over it (preschool, where she will also attend kindergarten - 5th grade). I worry she will never catch on! We see the signs like squatting or grunting when she has to poop but by then it's usually too late to put her on the potty and we have… read more

Leaving Parks
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

So it turns out we need to frame an ABA plan around leaving activities by somehow using a car ride. Now, the thing is, I don't drive, and even if I did... our parks are in walking distance from where we live. It needs to be in sight or it doesn't count. Car rides are often associated with shopping, errands, or special outings, even just going to unfamiliar parts of town. We have had some big blow ups about leaving the playground but once their dad showed up with the car, he jumped off the slide… read more

Any Tips For Potty Training A Nonverbal 4 Year Old?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My 4 year old son is nonverbal, diagnosed with level 2 autism. I've just started an attempt at potty training, but with not much success. He will sit on the potty but very briefly. He shows no sign that he has to "go" and is not bothered at all by a full diaper. I've tried setting a timer, offering rewards and set up a little potty area with books but I'm not having much luck. Any tips or support would be so appreciated!

Potty Training
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son is 5.....he has HFA, ADHD combo, SPD, and Pica.....he will use the potty at school but fights at home.....he doesn't mind sitting in soiled or wet pull ups or underwear.....he will go potty if he is changing and has to go.....so now my questions......

How long will this last?
Why doesn't it bother him to be in soiled or wet pull ups or underwear?
Why don't rewards work?
Am I alone in this?

I'm tired of smelling my child in public
