Can Anyone Share What Your Experience Was Like If Your Child Had Their Own Para In The Classroom?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I'm coming up on our iep meeting to talk about the transition from their special needs pre-k class to mainstream kindergarten next year. I know that they will both be provided a para for the whole day. I understand that they need a little extra help to stay focused and on task and they can be somewhat impulsive which could make it difficult for their teacher to keep up with their needs and the needs of everyone else in the class. They are going to be in the same class because there is only one… read more

Hello Melissa, you are in good company. I would suggest calling an IEP and requesting a behavior assessment. With the assessment results, they can provide services from a school behaviorist.

Just take your time with it. I'm not leaving my son alone with the aide no time soon. I need time for him to adjust to her. Just let someone come in for a few hours to start and let your child get… read more

School Classification On IEP
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hello Everyone,

New member here. My son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS at age 4. This diagnosis was changed to ADD Inattentive Type a few years after that. It really has been a whirlwind of changed/new diagnoses for the last several years, an emotional rollercoaster to say the least. My question pertains to his public school IEP classification, which is currently "speech impaired." I didn't push for an ASD classification, since I had no difficulty obtaining the necessary services in the school… read more

Has Anyone Had To Put In A Safety Plan For Your Child In Elementary School? On Top Of Iep?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son who is in first grade has had a rough couple of months, and these past two weeks it has gotten worse since being put on new medication. We are having a safety plan meeting this week and was wondering if anyone has suggestions on what to put into place and such. He’s been getting very aggressive and running away (out the building). School work seems to be the main part of the anxiety since he is in a regular class room, with no help in there
Side note, miraculously I’m assuming the… read more

Does Anyone Have Experience Asking For A One On One Aide For Their Child During Their IEP?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am hoping to get a one on one aide added from my son. I have been told by 1 staff member the district rarely, if ever, writes a 1 on 1 into an ARD (iep in Texas) but the support is provided. I would rather have it written into the ARD because I am just not that trusting..... I have been reading articles and feel like a) probably I am going to be told no and b) it should have occurred to me sooner to get doctor's and psychiatrist's documentation. I doubt I can get that together before Tuesday… read more

Special Preschool Aides- What Are They Suppose To Do In School/class?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

We are in San Diego, Poway school district. In a class of 10 kids, there's one teacher & 5 aides. Lot of IEP goals are possible to work upon provided my kid is pushed little bit more. 60% of the goals are not even 50% successful. So What's the use of so much staff around in the class? Lot of these things he is able to do at in-home ABA class. We have questions in our mind about motivation, scenario planning (to work on specific task), instruction delivery to my kid.

Does anyone has knowledge… read more

It all starts with the teacher. If your child has a good teacher , the aides will follow their lead. And vice versa. I've seen both scenarios. Luckily , my child's first teacher was good natured… read more
