How To Stop A Meltdown Once It Has Started
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

if my son is playing a game on the copmuter or ps2 and he loses he has a complete meltdown, and i try to calm himm down but talking to him only makes him madder and holding him makes it worse so then my dad(who doesnt understand autism) comes to the bedroom(which has no door on it for me to be able to shut, and tells me to just spank his behind. But I dont want to teach him to hit or slap any more than he does already, anyone got advice, i sure could use it

Just let it run it's course and try to "ignore" it, making sure he can't hurt himself by matter-of-factly removing objects that could cause him harm.

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

Taking into consideration that my daughter is 3 years old what strategies do you use to calm your child from a meltdown when the reason is unknown or a trigger has been set off & they need help calming down???? Breathing exercises or counting to 10 don’t work for her as she is 3 & nonverbal w/ ASD level3.

What Are Some Strategies To Help With Meltdowns?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

My daughter was recently diagnoses with autism so I am still learning about her diagnosis and some of the things that I can expect to experience. One of my biggest challenges helping her when she is experiencing a meltdown. I have tried holding her, or singing to her none of these really help to console her she pretty much has to tire out. The other day she was having a meltdown in the car and I tried offering her my hand to see if just having some physical contact with me would help and that… read more

my son is a 6 y/o Aspie and ADHD (evne though I think he has some undiagnosed things as well) but sometimes when he meltdowns at home I can't get him calmed down no matter what...he throws things, hits things (like the tv or the dog or his sister), opens doors and slams them, rocks a small table back and forth in to the wall, etc etc. Sometimes I just have to grab him and sit on the sofa with him with both arms wrapped around him and sometimes my legs, but he is very strong and sometimes it just… read more

Music/movies Used To Calm Meltdowns?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

What movies or music do you use to calm a meltdown? For us we use a variety of songs/movies to get our daughter to calm down. When she was a baby, all we had to put on was Don't Fear The Reaper (I guess she needed more cowbells) or Yeah!! by Usher ("yeah" was her first word at three months). We now have discovered that she loves Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds (one of our cats is named Lucy from the song). As far as movies go, they wouldn't be movies that a normal five year old girl would like. My… read more

How Do I Figure Out What Causes Meltdowns? Is It Really Possible To Avoid Them When Its Something He HAS To Do?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

Thank you to everyone who wrote with ideas and support on the day that I was really struggling! It was mentioned that I should try to figure out what happens before a meltdown and how I reinforce it after to encourage it to continue. This is veryhard to do because my little guy's meltdowns can occur when it is time to bathe, time to brush teeth, time to get up and it occurred after a train and boat ride that he loved when he needed to hold my hand in the street. Seems like it occurs any time he… read more
