Education Problems/Expulsion Or Suspension
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I need some advice. My son with autism is 12 years old. He has had some issues at school this year (he is in a self contained one on one classroom with all other autistic kids). He has had several explosive episodes where he as hit staff and destroyed the room (threw things on the floor, etc). The school has suspended him a few times and then we found out today that the half days that he is sent home for disruptive behavior also counts as suspensions. With that being said, there is a limit of 10… read more

Anyone Having Difficulty With Their Child's School Regarding Autism IEP Eligibility And Suspensions?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son was not diagnosed with ASD until he was 11, he is now almost 13. Prior to that he was diagnosed with ADHD and ODD. After a reevaluation this summer it was determined he has Asperger's and ADHD. He has always had difficulty with aggression, but some of the more obvious ASD behaviors have increased since starting puberty. (More perseveration, vocal stimming, tantrums, threats, entering others personal space). The school has refused to acknowledge that his behaviors are due to Autism… read more

Has Anyone Had Their Autistic Child Suspended From School For Behavior Problems?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My 7 yr old son was suspended today because his teacher gave him a demand and another student repeated it to him and my son smacked the student on the back leaving a red mark. He is in an autism impaired classroom. He has been having behavior problems in school. Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

If this has happened before or becomes an issue I would ask for a behavior plan or a functional behavioral assessment. Usually a behavior is a form of communication. He obviously should not b hitting… read more

How do u know if your child needs ABA?

It’s usually the recommendation of the Dr who diagnosed. If it’s something you’re considering then you’d have an evaluation done just like with other services like speech and OT

Has Anyone Dealt With Severe Behavioral Changes Suddenly At 14?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son is 14 y/o and was in general obedient and well behaved with occasional but mild misconduct issues, that's until about two months ago when he started spitting constantly and peeing at all times and places, also laughing kind of defiantly, I took him to his neuro and he took him off Risperidone (which had also made him gain a lot of weight) and put him on Atomoxetine but it only made it worse, now he has meltdowns (it had been like 2 years since he had any), and (not sure if because of the… read more

Tips For Handling Behavioral Issues At Home Of A Child With Mild Autism
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My 5 year old son was recently diagonsed with mild Autism. His opportunities are social interaction & some sensory. He's always so in his own head or acting out his favorite cartoon that he doesn't listen to us a lot of the time. Getting him to stop & focus can be hard. He's currently receiving Speech & O.T services weekly. At school is his very well behaved & the teachers have no issues with him. But, at home it's another story. He has trouble handling his emotions & will have tantrums… read more

Further Diagnosis
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My daughter (7 years old) already has an ASD diagnosis through our Regional Center. She received it years ago after already having received nearly two years of related services. She is what many would term "high-functioning" as she's mainstreamed at school with only pull out services for speech. This next school year she will also be pulled out for social behavior type classes.

I know anxiety can go hand-in-hand with ASD. More and more of her behaviors appear to me to be in response to… read more
