I see the label HFA and I just wonder how it differs from Aspergers.
Our diagnostician says the only difference in HFA and Aspergers is the spelling
I am in the process of trying to get my Health Insurance to cover ABA therapy for my 4 year old son. I know that they may not cover this type of therapy. What funding and/or scholarships are available to help cover this expense as I cannot afford to pay for it? Are there other alternatives to this type of therapy that will work as well? I live in the state of Ohio. Please advise. I am stressing out about this.
Sorry I've been gone for a while. Regional center is a government run program. They provide early intervention and testing for kids from birth until 3.
What kind of doctor/professional can diagnosis sensory processing disorder??? My 6 year old has a lot of sensory "issues" and is currently diagnosed with ADHD but my gut tells me either that's not the right diagnosis for him or there's something more here. We see an OT for fine motor skills and for sensory seeking behaviors and a pediatric neurologist for ADHD. I asked both and the OT said the neurologist would do the diagnosis and the neurologist said that the OT should. I just want to either… read more
We got our diagnosis from an OT. We were told by our developmental pediatrician they were the only one that could do it that insurance would accept.
We talked to our dr's at the autism center earlier this year and the possibility of our son being diagnosed with "intellectual disability" came up. I would love to talk to someone here who may be going through the same thing now or in the past with your child. Or if you don't mind sharing your story here, we would really appreciate it.
Thank you
I have 2 boys with Intellectual Disability, ages 12 and 11. I don't believe this makes them low functioning, at least not the way I see it.
Our story is pretty complicated so if you want details I… read more
My child was diagnosed with ASD by a developmental/behavioral pediatrician, who we continue to check in with throughout the year. And have been for nearly two years now. I’ve heard some MAT friends mentioning their neuropsych as the one who diagnosed and/or works w their family. Is there a distinct difference in why you’d choose one specialist VS another? Is it age related, do these specialists work in tandem, etc.? Any perspective, very interested to know!
We have a 2 developmental pediatricians, a clinical psychologist who has spent 20+ years in the ASD world, as well as a neurologist. Our pcp pediatrician did an informal eval without putting the… read more

I live in Northern California and have a 29 month old son. I suspect my son might have ASD.. I called several developmental pediatrician in our area hoping to get an official medical diagnosis done, it seems like i am only able to get appointment after 5 months. My son who is almost 5 is taking the ADOS test next week. They think he might actually just be ADHD but i actually think he is both and I'm worried he might get the wrong diagnosis.... So what I'm wondering is how you separate someone who's is just ADHD from autism? What are the big signs to differentiate?
Kids can and do often have both. And that is totally what happened with my son. Diagnosed with ADHD young. Was pretty on par socially until around 9 or so when you could tell his peers were… read more
