Hi, I have a son who is over 5 years old and has autism who is still in diapers
Over the past 3-4 months, he's been exhibiting some changes in behavior when it comes to diaper changes. It started with him refusing to acknowledge when he had pooped in his diaper. He wouldn't let me change it and instead would have a major meltdown. He wanted to keep it on and continue doing whatever he was doing. He would happily sit in his dirty diaper all day if I allowed it, as it didn't bother him at all.… read more
Sometimes for some reason, the big reaction the kid does find funny because they don't understand normal social cues. I got upset when my son would sometimes want to wipe poop everywhere during diaper… read more

My son’s aba therapist made us a social story. He was doing exactly what your daughter is doing. We had to have him in a backward sleeper, taped up so he couldn’t reach to open. It was such a… read more
His school provides bare minimum with therapy. Our kids (only) were once on Medicaid and it seemed to provide pretty decent therapy throughout the week, however, with a pay bump at my job, and my wife now going back to work, we are just over the threshold for Medicaid. Private therapy is something that I know is worth it but again cannot simply afford it. Meanwhile our son has gone on 25min tangents in his classroom to the point where the teachers are growing intolerant. What are options for us… read more
We are having difficult time having my son ride the car as he cries a lot and cries hysterically. He will say this way, that way and we can't practically follow him as those ways doesn't take us to the destination. He seems to be wanting to go opposite of where we want to go. And it's not for entire route but majority of the route.
It's so difficult to handle as it sometimes distracts me from driving too and get irritated too.
Anyone experiencing the similar thing or any suggestions.
Thank… read more

When I do try to take him potty he just sits on the toilet and flushed and flushed than gets up and walks away.
It is difficult. But it’s difficult for parents of all kids because there’s no exact timeline and it’s frustrating and it seems endless when you’re doing. Just know this that he will eventually get… read more

Now that we are in the middle of cold and flu season (and also Covid) I wanted to get some tips or advice about giving meds to young autistic children who are non-verbal. It’s a challenge for us to even know what ails my son because he doesn’t communicate well.
Right now, he’s had a bad cold for a week and I took him to the doctor and he also has an ear infection. They prescribed antibiotics in liquid form but I can’t disguise it in chocolate milk because the taste is too strong. The… read more

My 15 year old high functioning autistic child (gender neutral) who has been self isolating for 1 year and has disordered eating is throwing large amounts of food in the bin. This is impacting the rest of the family in terms of dood not being there for others and me financially. I would like to 1) understand why they do it and 2) hear from others who have managed this successfully. Thanks
I recommend researching the way autism effects eating disorders. This is just normal behavior for someone with disordered eating. It’s not exactly a product of autism but it does contribute. Here’s… read more
