Hi there all, we're looking to highlight the experiences of people on the autistic spectrum struggling with public bathrooms. i.e. the sensory overload from air dryers and automatic flushes. We think this is a really important issue that is not in the public conversation so please get in touch if you want to share an experience around this.
The hand dryers are bad but predictable. The auto flush toilet nearly derailed potty training for two of my kids. We had to go back to pullups while on vacation at a popular theme park because of… read more
Do you have any suggestions for a good southside of Chicago public school for students with autism. My grand sons are 5 years old and will be starting kindgergarten this year. I just wanted them to get into a school in which they will be able to receive the therapies that they need as well as a good education.
Thank you in advance
I'm looking for the best southern state with the best resources. We're trying not to move back to Ohio, but we're not receiving much help where we're at.
Not southern but I saw one individual say they were considering moving north. I can say that having my child involved with MMCC (Margaret Murphys Center for Children) has been awesome in Maine. We… read more
He'll be 5 in July.
This is the mystery
Depending on where you are some states, have a really good special day and autism programs in the public school system. He’ll require you getting an IEP and learning a lot about… read more

This song really helped my son.
How did you get him/her into school, private or public, and how is it going? I understand that there are no actual autism schools as there are in Florida, but I am trying to figure out how public school is system works in North Carolina. Separate classes, different teachers, etc.
Grandson is 4recently diagnosed with autis. He will be starting kindergarten in Sept. He is supposed to be attending a charter school not sure if that's best. The other option is public school
If that Charter school can provide things like speech/ occupational therapy/ Physical therapy theses are the services that children on the Autism Spectrum need. Best of luck😊
Potty training ugh!
They aren't ready until they're ready. This is true for those without autism, too. But at least neurologically typical toddlers can be shamed into conforming. Autism by definition has no shame, or… read more
Aba or school?
Questions like these are difficult, because every child has their own needs. I would say to go with your gut. As others said, if your child can stand school, or even really likes it, that IS… read more
Hello. My autistic son turned 7 and I know he’s supposed to start school. The schools in our area do not have enough support/resource for him. He was referred to a private school for autism but he is on the waiting list and 4th in that list. They said realistically it may take 4 years to make it to the top of the list. What do we do in the meantime? If he can’t start school until years later, how will he be at “grade level”? Also, how does grade level and state testing work with children who… read more
@kgates-when the twins were little and a school in Chicago did not have an autism class or any support, I campaigned to get all of that started in this school on the south side. OMG it was so hard. I… read more
