Hello all I'm recently married to a single father that has two boys with ASD. While they are diagnosed and in a special needs program through the public school district I don't believe he is doing everything that he can to meet their needs. How do i approach him with what I think is best? (I am an elementary school teacher and I have some experience working with children on the spectrum and different strategies to use )
Thank you for your answers I will let you know how it is going once we all move in together this summer
I am the step mom of a 10 year old boy diagnosed 2 years ago on the Autism spectrum. He lives with his mom in PA, has the autism waiver in PA and attends public school there. He has an IEP, has special assistance from support teachers, has a periodic check in with an autism specialist from Vista outreach services (which specializes in Autism), and other support services through school. He is very high functioning, is in a regular classroom, gets Bs and Cs in grades and is very social. (He… read more
Sorry for the long delay in response, I have not been logging on as I should. Well, to find a behaviorist I would contact the school and see if they contract with one. If that turns up no leads, I… read more
I have two sons with Autism (but 4 sons total). This is not my 1st rodeo with sleep issues as it took forever to get our older son with ASD to sleep all night. Our 2 yr old son with ASD is up every 2-3 hours all night long and has been this way since birth. This is especially hard since we just had a new baby and the baby sleeps more than our 2 yr old! He wakes up for no reason and is sometimes just wide awake. Sometimes will go back to sleep after 10 minutes, sometimes after 2-3hrs… read more

Hi Everyone, My son is turning 3, and is diagnosed mild autism, high functioning. His testing at the public school he will be attending in September said he is overall on the average range. However, they are suggesting only 60 mins inclusion time a day, with the other 5 hours being in self contained. I was surprised by this, and want to ask for more...but I am not sure if I am right in doing so. Any feelings on self contained vs inclusion? What worked for your kids? Thanks!!!
Usually inclusion programs are shorter days and self contained are longer. You sound like you are getting the best of both worlds with 60 minutes of typical peer time and then the rest of the time to… read more
Hello, I don't want to start a vaccination debate at all. My kids are fully vaccinated. My question is my son on the spectrum will be turning 5 this summer, so I was going to have his kindergarten vaccinations done then, but am thinking about spacing them out. Has anyone spaced out the kindergarten vaccinations? I don't feel vaccines are the cause autism, but now that I know he is on the spectrum, I think I would feel better not having them all on one day. I feel they get too many in one day… read more

Hello, We are looking for a developmental preschool public or private in the knoxville or surrounding areas. We are not pleased where he is going and are looking for a new place for our 3 year old son with autism. Thanks!
Hi, yes he has an IEP. Just seems like a big difference in the therapy he gets through the school system and what we were getting privately. I know every therapist is different, it just seems like we… read more
Is anyone in Ohio, (particularly Cincinnati area) with a child on the spectrum, able to explain the perameters or stipulations regarding access to ABA, if on Medicaid with MCP United Healthcare Community Plan? I'm exhausted trying to secure anyone actually working for this company to provide answers...but was told my dear son could get ABA (from a rep at UHC) but had to have pre-authorization. That's all lovely, but I cannot find ONE SINGLE PROVIDER and neither can they, who will work with UHC… read more
I am a sibling of two autistic young adults. I want to start my own family, but I am worried about (the possibly increased chanced of) having an autistic child. After witnessing my parents' struggle to provide my siblings with the support that they need, as well as the struggle to keep themselves and their marriage together, I question if I will be strong enough through that experience myself, as well. I would like to connect with families or siblings of autistic individuals who might have gone… read more

We've been in the shots for two months and I haven't seen much of a change with them. What's worked best for us is supplements and probiotics. We're still doing the shots though.
