My son has been in kindergarten for two weeks. He is non-verbal. We have an IEP, he was observed in typical preschool -- I was told by all staff, principal, school psychologists, teachers, etc. that he would be great in mainstream school. Last Thurs, I was told by his kindergarten teacher that he is adjusting and doing very well. I was told by the special ed teacher that he is "extremely bright". Yesterday I get a phone call that they don't want to wait until October to meet to talk… read more
Thank you everyone! I absolutely want to do what is best for him and I did hire an educational advocate to help me navigate through this mess so that the school can't pull the wool over my eyes… read more
Over the summer my 8-year-old son has started this weird kicking thing. Not kicking people. He lays down in my bed or his and kicks his legs out, closes his eyes and so forth. Like an over stimulation thing or something. But we have come to recognize that it is every night like he is fighting fatigue or sleep or whatever. He is non-verbal so there is no getting his input except for "No." He does say that quite well and for everything. Anyway, we are dying to figure out what to do to help him… read more
I won't discard the suggestion and will bring it up to.his doctor. Thanks for your reply.
I know all teachers are legally bound, by the child find act to identify and find children with disabilities, however I am wondering how often, realistically, this happens. After working part time in schools this year. I am realizing that some schools are a baby sitting place or more like a factory then a learning environment, sadly. Many staff members just assume that all kids are misbehaved and that they is nothing more behind it even though there clearly is. My youngest daughter is also 3… read more
A cynic like me only gets more cynical the more I see how autistic kids go through the system. The teachers and therapists have to deal with a lot of kids so we see ourselves as the primary… read more
Anyone have a young adult who is echolalic and does self-talk? Any tips on decreasing it?
Echolalia is communication... it can be a conversational placeholder, and meanings are fluid. Palilalia, or self-echoing, is similar... placeholder with fluid meaning. What do YOU do for emphasis of… read more
New study with intervention starting as early as 7 to 15 months for "at risk" kids. According to this research, 6 out of 7 were able to catch up to peers by the age of 3. Now, unfortunately, the age of diagnosis is often age of 3+ and to get service can take few more years where we live, so the practical reality is quite the opposite.

I think this particular study is about changing trajectories and that is something that I would try to change even if a child is just developmentally or speech delayed rather than autism and most… read more
My son is 11 and diagnosed with Asperger's spring of 2014. In his 504 plan it states that they school counselor will provide him with 'social training'. Well we are on week 5 of school and I saw the counselor while at the school yesterday and asked her when his training would begin.
1-she didn't realize that my son now has a 504 plan for ASD (she knew about his IEP for gifted....he is high functioning, but misses social cues left and right!)
2-she is open for suggestions for what to do… read more
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll be looking them up. The FaceSay website looks very interesting. Our Psychologist recommended the book Creative Therapy 52 Exercises for Groups by Dossick & Shea.

We are planning to move to another state where there's mandatory coverage for individuals with autism. I saw one poster who said it's about $10,000/year when you add the deductible and copays up. I know states have ACA/Obamacare or other laws but I wonder about the waiting lists and if any therapists will accept it. Yeah, there are Medicaid waivers or a good school district but so far I'm not thrilled the Medicaid route (it's better than nothing) and I'm I assuming better school districts may… read more
We got Dani a BCBS policy for $215 a month with a $1500 ded and $10 copays for therapies like speech and OT. Kept old policy as secondary since same cost for 1 or 2 children. We just need to get ABA… read more
My daughter turns 9 this school year. Because of this age, she will be retested by the schools. Does anyone have a description of what these official tests are? It sounds like 9 is the age that the schools will list an official diagnosis, if I understand correctly. Even though we have had a diagnosis of ASD for 4 years.
I'd like to get a head start on understanding what these tests are.
Thanks!
Betsy
I'll send an e-mail to the SpEd teacher to find out more specifics. This was briefly mentioned at the end of last years IEP.
Hi! I have a 27-month old with high functioning autism. For the past 6 months, he has been cared for by my mother in law, and Early Intervention comes to our house. Unfortunately, my mother in law was injured yesterday and can no longer care for him. We are in desperate need of an inclusive day care/preschool in Northern New Jersey. Any recommendations? Thanks so much!
Hi. I'm wondering if you ever found a facility. I'm in the same boat. Thanks!
