Hope this answer still helps. For us, we haven't gotten the hours we need for a full time ABA program--we've just been getting about 8 hours a week due to lack of availability of therapists. Our ABA… read more
Looking for some ideas/suggestions on how to help my teeneage son with Asperger's remember to do his chores, homework, etc. I've tried every motivator I can think of, and he's even frustrated that he is unable to remember to do these things. Reminders needed for taking meds, feeding the dog, turning in homework, chores, personal hygiene, etc.
@A MyAutismTeam Member Thank you so much for your insight! It really is helpful to hear it from the ASD POV.
Davis is 7 yrs old who was finally diagnosed this month. The hospital said they were going to refer him to a therapist nearby. Just wanted a little more insight or experience on it.
It's important to note that ABA therapy is not the only approach available for supporting individuals with autism. Different individuals may respond to various interventions differently. If you have… read more

Hi all. I'm a bit, or very, overwhelmed, but reading the stories here has been awesome. Sammy is on vacation until mid-January in the Philippines with my wife, who has not yet done anything but deny his issues. He is caring, loving and bright. He seems pretty social, even with some other kids, and isn't afraid to hang out with most people. No real tantrums yet. He can phonetically say the whole alphabet, but has only three words, which he picked up a year ago, and they sound odd. If I show… read more
We did a 3 day fast of all dairy & saw such immediate improvement in eye contact that we went dairy free and gluten free too, which after 4 months has resulted in a huge improvement in her speech… read more
This year our school decided to have most of First Grade homework online (Raz-kids, SpellingCity, Ixl.com) I'm finding it difficult to do 3 days of ABA home program at 2 hrs per day after school and do 30-45 min of homework on the computer. (Plus be a kid and play, watch a cartoon, etc.) I would much rather have a list of spelling words and quiz him various times a day, etc. like my NT 8 year old had at that age (and still does). What does everyone else have for their 1st grader who is HFA and… read more
That's too much for 1st grade. They should only have 10-15 minutes + reading for 20 minutes or so. My 1st grader is required to practice math facts for 10-15 minutes and read for 20 minutes. She does… read more
I was doing homework with my 6 yr old son tonight, and he seemed to be very unfocused and forgetful. He was not able to answer a lot of math problems I know he knows. It got me thinking about homework strategies and what things you have done to help your child with Autism be successful at completing homework at home?
Do the homework in small pieces. Maybe work on 2-3 questions and then take a break and come back to it later. You may even ask the teacher to send home less homework(instead of 10 questions, maybe… read more
i ask this , because i myself feel 100% THAT IT HAS played a huge part , now i dont want any one to jump on the ban wagon . just please share you story if so thank you
I know that there’s one extreme “Do all the therapy” side and one “Don’t do anything “ side. One side can be the traditional “Do what I say” parent, and the other side can be “The child knows best” parent. I’m in the middle of this debate. I listen to my child and give her reasonable choices. I set clear boundaries for her. I maintain that the parent is in charge and works with the child within limits. I don’t know what to do about homework. The first homework she had for this school year sent… read more
Maybe 15 minutes of homework with little incentives in between? I know you've mentioned before about homework being a struggle. It sounds like she sets high standards for herself and if she gets… read more
Any kindergarten success stories you can share? He is at preschool with lots and lots of play time and he does really well there. Next year we are looking at a place that has academics until 3 pm, with 15 mins for recess, 45 mins for lunch. That’s it for unstructured play time. Then there’s 50 mins of PE Monday’s and Wednesday’s, 30 mins of PE on Thursdays. Seems like Friday’s are very light (cooking, art, hanging out). Are there any programs that have more unstructured play time that are good… read more
