I need to apply for SSI because I have been unable to work for almost a year due to caretaking for my son. Does anyone know if there are caregiver benefits available in California or SSI for Aspergers or HFA?
I had the same question. MsJanet must not have empathy for mothers who need to stay at home for their kids to ensure they are brought up in a society that demands our Autistic kids to behave "normal" many people believe still (even parents with children on the spectrum) that if they can do it so can you. I found most women who are forced (yes I am one had a great career but could not do it with taking care of my stepson) to stay home who take the caretaker role usually have a spouse who is on the spectrum (or single) and need assistance. I am 38 have been working since I was 16 and have never endured the hell the job market has become. Not only is it hard to get a job, it's also hard to get adequate child care and cheaper to stay home with our children if one spouse works. I used to be like Ms. Janet when I was a single mom and working. I had no empathy or sympathy for anyone as I was making it work (yes it's hard but manageable) yet after experiencing ASD, and truly understanding the demands of having a child in need, I vowed never to judge others again. :) I hope Ms. Janet and others like her watch their words as KARMA really knows how to wake you up and smell the humble. take care bakomama your not alone.
