Is There Any Way To Get Free Or Low Cost Tutoring For My Autistic Children?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have 2 autistic children, 1 diagnosed with severe asperger's. I am trying to find help for them. They are in 5th & 6th grade. Both are academically challenged, is there any help available? I'm at my wits end. Homework EVERY night ends in crying & meltdowns.

826Valencia, funded by David Eggers, has outlets in many major (and not so major) cities. http://826valencia.org/

He funded that tutoring organization with money he got from his National Book award. There's an 826Michigan, an 826Boston, and several others. You should also contact your local libraries; many children's rooms and youth rooms have free tutoring after school. If not, ask where you can find some. Where do you live? I can try to research some for you. [[email: [[email: [[email: (Email address can only be seen by the question and answer creators) (email me there)

@A MyAutismTeam Member This is an excellent point. Most of our kids qualify, either by intellectual issue or by emotional issue, for some consideration. Try to get them an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) -but if you're not ready to go the official route, make an appointment (don't just stop in) to talk with each teacher who is giving homework. Explain the situation in a calm, "I could use some ideas" manner. I just found out my nephew was taking 2 hrs to do his homework - had I known, I would have told my sister he had a learning disorder, or SOMETHING, right then and there. But she just struggled on silently. It was an awful year.

Many older students are also willing to tutor younger kids, and actually need some "volunteer hours" to graduate. This is a perfect answer - and your kid will prefer it to an adult tutoring them. Ask a teacher if this is a possibility - and it's free. But you might consider doing that in addition to the other things - DO talk to his/her teachers about lessening the load.

I'd probably be the one having a meltdown! Kids homework is much more advanced than when I was a kid. If you live near any college or university, I'd bet you could contact someone on campus about your situation. Students always need money and/or there may be instructors willing to donate their time given the situation. Good luck!

One more thought: If you have any religious affiliation, you may be able to post a notice on their bulletin board or whatever. Networking can really help!

I had my school modify the homework and they meet with a teacher at the end of the day so she can make sure they are aware of what needs to be done.
