I have done some research and have found that most Auditory Integration programs require about $1000 to buy an IPOD and headphones along with a set of 7-10 CDs and then come with optional additional training for the parent. This is beyond what I can afford. WHY does not the public library or the school system have things like this in their lending library? What are your thoughts on how my son could best benefit from an auditory integration method? Hmmmm, if I knew how to study more on the⦠read more
We use Therapeutic Listening (Is this auditory integration-- I'm not certain?) and it is a check-out program from our OT, who is based at a children's therapy center. I totally agree with you, we would not be able to afford this on our own and I wish it was available at school. I wonder if there would be anyone who would be willing to lend or share with you. Maybe try and ad on Craigslist?
I had checked on this for my son a while back. I was advised by our OT that this type of therapy is designed to be used WITH the aid of a therapist (ie O.T.) There is a special training course they go through to know how to properly match the cd to the person using it. I understand there is something unique in the way the cds are recorded to guarantee the therapeutic effect. I had similar questions about copying cds or purchasing some of the apps you may have seen which claim to have the same effect. From what I've heard, there has not been as much research done with systems other than Therapeutic Listening (Vital Links.)
My son tried Therapeutic Listening during his OT sessions a few times. At first, there was a dramatic increase in focus and ability. He wore the headphones while on a balance beam and was completely steady even when bending down to pick up bean bags. I was totally ready to find a way to buy the uber expensive headphones, etc! After a few more sessions, I think the novelty wore off and he wasn't interested in wearing the headphones anymore. I often wondered if regular (non-altered) music would have the same effect. Anyhow, we were able to find alternatives for relaxation techniques and I didn't pursue this further.
We could all benefit from a special needs swap website :)
Craigslist is a fantastic idea. I should also call around to every organization that works with Autistic children in my area about this too! Thanks Rachel!
