Our 11 year old PDD- NOS (very bright) son goes to a ABA model school in NYC. Last year we had a year round teacher turn over; so we also paid for a private tutor after school. The tutor said that the school was giving homework that was way to easy and made our son not want to do the work. His state test was horrible! Over all - no improvement! Now what do we do?
How strong is your knowledge of IDEIA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act)? It sounds like the problem may be with his goals in his IEP. The goals drive the placement. Goals also hold them accountable. Feel free to message me for more info. Check out the blog I write on my son, as we had the same issue and are now making progress.
Update: I've been out of commission for a while (sorry guys). So, we've moved back to Montclair,NJ. Mostly, because of the horrible admission process into NYC public high schools. That's another long story. . . . Nevertheless, Montclair has been, for the most part, a blessing. Our son is now in a mid- level special education class, working toward full mainstream. He's is the only HFA kid in a classroom of kids who need extra academic help. Verbally, his classmates are helping him to improve with his overall language development. Academics. . . Still a work in progress. Even though he has made the honor roll since starting school . . . He's still 1 or 2 years behind. But, I REALLY LIKE his school team! He only has speech therapy now. . . But they where willing to give him a little extra. He will start high school next year, so we a considering a private mainstream placement. . . Provided we can find a school willing to take a chance with a HFA kid!!
As for mom, I will be starting a blog page soon. . . Hoping to put together a one-spot resource page for parents and also post my experience as a parent. My FACEBOOK PAGE, pretty much sums up have I will approach this . . . . Due to my COUNTLESS HOURS of researching to find information to help my child AND myself. So friend me on FACEBOOK: Monique E Bell-Akonor. And please add me to your teams. I so love this site . . . So supportive!! :-))
