I am a pharmacist by profession, medications for anxiety are hit or miss at times what works for one person doesn;t work for another and some people experience side effects and others don't. A rule of thumb is to start low dose and go slow, keep a daily log on your child so you can see what works or what doesn't.

At times when you wean children off medications there will be a one month wash out period where the symptoms they were being treated for come back or get worse and then once the body's chemicals stabilize they are ok. Since they need time to get adjusted to medication, they also need time for their bodies to get use to not being with medications. Aside from medication it is important to remember the things we all need to be healthy: fresh air, sunshine, activity, good nutrition or supplementation when necessary and a good nights sleep.

My son takes sertraline. He has since 8th grade, when he transitioned back to his home school from his therapeutic school. It really has helped him not get anxious over the little stuff. We do try to wean him off it every summer, as he is 17 - but he just hasn't been able to self manage yet. Maybe some day, but as long as he needs it- it will be there for him.

Have you seen a doctor of naturopathic medicine or done allergy testing bloodwork? Just curious. They doctor suggested anxiety meds but we changed his diet based on the allergy tests - eliminating the foods that were causing inflammation in the bowl and brain has improved his quality of life which decreases his stress.

Wow, I applaud you ! I know it could be a lifelong commitment but we, as parents, will do anything to get our babies well !
