so my son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS today through our county's MHMR, and I am wondering if the school district has to accept their diagnosis or if they can choose to ignore it? I have had so many parents tell me that their school doesn't believe their child is autistic, but when presented with diagnostic proof do they still have the right to refuse it? I am only asking because my son's school did their own evaluation of him and said that he didn't seem autistic at all. I'm afraid they will… read more
A medical diagnosis of autism has different criteria from an educational diagnosis. Now if you disagree with the school's evaluation, you have the legal right to get an independent evaluation paid for by the school district. Definitely get assistance from an advocate or your local disability rights group.
I called a special education advocacy place here in Michigan just to find out more about that, because I have the same problem. At least for here, they can ignore it. Apparently, having the diagnosis does not mean that your child falls under the disability act "educationally". i know that sounds ridiculous, but it's something I found lots of parents fighting. If I were you I would contact either your nearest Autism Society or a special education advocacy place near you to ask farther questions about your state. I wish you the best of luck.
Oh my gosh - they cannot ignore a professional diagnosis - check out http://www.wrightslaw.com/ for lots of good information on your rights!!!
agreed.. then when the school gets the observations done.. then they can set up a meeting and get your son a IEP... keep on them!! don't let up!!! is there a autistic advisor for your school?
You need to have your child evaluated by a psychologist. The psychologist will give the diagnosis and the school will need to have an EIP meeting and adjust his lesson plan to his needs.
