A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am new to this I have a 6 year old son with PDD-NOS. Who due to unemployment on my part is with my in-laws doing school and therapy in Oklahoma I want to move back to Houston But I do not know where to enroll or what to do for that matter. Can some one advise me on what to do?

Make sure you closely review your insurance policy and how it covers autism therapy, speech, OT, ABA, etc. if you have a policy that meets the requirements of the state of Texas, you'll be in better shape than if you have a policy through your employer who is "self funded". "Self funded"/"self insured" companies don't have to follow State of Texas requirements (only federal requirements), so you might be surprised by what's not covered (none of my son's therapy is covered). So, you really need to become an "insurance expert".

I'm in Houston and I can't imagine that there are many other places in the world that have the number of autism resources (groups, schools, therapists, doctors, etc) that Houston has available. However, if you're currently experiencing financial issues, this may make it more difficult. You could probably start with an IEP and go from there. Also, many schools and therapists offer financial assistance - you'll just have to apply. Let me know what you're specifically seeking. I'm not too familiar with N Houston pubic schools, but you could probably schedule a visit.

Exactly. Ask your therapist to help you with this. It's their job after all.

If he is therapy currently I would start by researching the other place and see what is available there(therapy and school wise) for his needs and if they can meet his specific needs. You can find alot of information online. If anything find the area your planning on moving to and find the schools for that area and treatment places and out patient care facilites and get phone numbers and start calling them. That's just what I would do if it was me.
