Anyone Have Any Ideas On Giving Meds?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi there
I have a six yr old son diagnosed with autism, he is verbal (very) but mostly scripted or phrases picked up from computer games and other kids. He does "talk" with me but only on his own terms. Thankfully he is VERY affectionate with everyone when he's in a good mood and happy.

However... For the past year and increasingly every day it seems he has these incredibly violent outbursts both at home and at school. For example last month at school he started being aggressive to himself… read more

i have similar issues with my 3 1/2 yr old, i have to put meds in his prune/apple juice to mask them, grinding them up 1st as much as i can, and then shaking the living hell out of it before giving it too him...

I understand that everyone has their opinions and if you don't believe in this, then that is your prerogative...but, I would be so much more inclined to start with supplements and diet instead of chemicals. But, if it works for you and you are happy with it, then that is great. Don't want to force opinions or anything. Good luck to you with the pills.

This is a tough one, but we have had the same issues with our daughter and we had to get them to prescribe liquid meds for her that we can mix in with her drinks, because if she even has any kind of difference in taste or texture she will not take it. Not all meds come in liquid so sometimes you have to try another med that does the same thing. Other than that we have tried mixing with Ice Cream with our son who is a little less picky and he does ok with that.

I tried the juice thing... But these are time released/extended released. There are 2 different colored teeny little ball like sprinkles inside the capsule... One releases the mediation immediately and the other slowly devolves and kicks in about 4 hrs later.

So I can't crush or grind them up. I did put them into his juice in a sippy cup, but they just sank to the bottom of the cup whole & didn't devolve... I had to make the holes really large, then invert the cup, making sure most of the little granules of medicine dropped down and were at the tip.... then holding it that way, I tried rushing it to his mouth for a sip! He just kept looking at me like I was nuts!( Haha... OK maybe I *am* nuts but he has yet to notice)

Thanks for your suggestion!

Thank you... I wish he'd eat ice cream! I think you're right about the liquid meds though... I'm going to give it another couple tries and then call the Dr again. Thanks for your reply!
