my son wen to see a developmental pediatrician today (neurologist) and she recommened seeing a genetist. reasons for genetic testing are to test for fragile x and other genetic markers (more or less dna components) that may cause autism. knowing those markers will help you target the best therapy for them. i'm definitely getting it done. i found this article on cnn today about it: http://www.cnn.com/2012/12/07/health/time-blood...
hope this helps.

But don't genetic tests also have the potential to rule out ASD? The thinking being that he could have been misdiagnosed and we are not treating the source of his problems.

My grandson's doc is currently suggesting genetic tests, as his behavior hasn't improved even with medication, multiple changes of meds and doses, behavioral therapy, changing to a private school dedicated to special needs, an IEP, or a special one-on-one state paid teacher's aid.
