Potty Training Tips Needed
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My 5 year old is still not potty trained. I am going to try and potty train this summer when he doesn't have school. What are some good tips?

We set aside a specific reward that was only available for using the potty. In our case, it was M&Ms, but you can use anything that is motivating.

For the first few weeks, he received the reward any time he used the potty, even if we had physically carried him in placed him there. Gradually, he only started getting the reward only for those occasions where he initiated the trip to the potty.

It took our son a long time to recognize the body's natural signals that it was time to go, but once he started recognizing the signals, he made better progress.

Some kids get better than 90% in just a week or so, but many kids don't. It took us a year of training to get to 99%, and we still have some minor regressions.

My wife and I bought a Toddler Toilet seat. Its a regular toilet seat you bolt on your toilet but there is a magnetic toddler seat that folds down out of the lid. It gives them a sense of something that is theirs and it never changes. We use "Making Bubbles" pour in dish soap, hand soap, body wash, what ever we can get to when its "time to go". We used regular underwear and just stuck by his side all day and repeatedly asked "Tell mommy/daddy if you have to go potty" and watched for his signs when he had to go. There were some accidents but he got the hang of it slowly. We are in a pull up at night and to go places but he rarely uses/gos in a pull up he doesn't like the feel of wet on him. That was the major factor of letting him wear the regular undies we call them big boy underwear. There is a book or e-book called 3 day potty training.......... it dont work in 3 days.......... but it does get you some great advice on how to deal with the potty training issue. Good luck and please let me know how it goes.
