Does it make sense to mix ABA with ST and OT, instead of just doing ABA
My 21 month old son was just diagnosed as being on the spectrum last week. He had already been scheduled to receive speech therapy, occupational therapy, and special instruction due to his language delays and sensory issues. Now that he has an autism diagnosis I'm being told he should get 4 hours of ABA a day; 2 at a center and 2 at home, and that will replace all the other therapies. I still don't even fully believe… read more
My son receives ABA, OT and ST totalling about 20-22 hours/week. He recently turned 5, and is mostly nonverbal and also has apraxia of speech. Therapy is mainly home based, partial clinic. He has strong echoic abilities, tougher spontaeous communication, relies on PECS and recently started learning AAC. All that said, his OT recommended he has a PT eval bc she sees challenges w gross motor imitation (GMI)—he does have some GMI skills but she thinks PT will help growth. She also said that the PT… read more
Thank you everyone! I think PT is worth evaluating to see if even needed; his OT is very talented and supportive. But I know we need to be mindful of how we proceed, because all that said, if he does… read more
I'm looking for some insight from anyone who's had experience with both DIR/Floortime and with ABA. We might be moving our son to a new school who uses DIR/Floortime but our Regional Center thinks it's not as effective or useful as ABA.
ABA is more efficient if applied by certified therapists consistently. floor time can help in addition, I find it great for play time at home. this is just my opinion.
My daughter has ABA theraphy and nothing else yet. I want her to have speech, occupational and physical but not sure she would be able to handle all of that at once, plus I don't see how there is enough time to fit all of that in daily. I really need help with which is the most important for her young age. Please share your experiences or what has helped your child during toddler years. Thank you.
My son will be 3 yrs old in September. We do one hour a week of ABA, Speech, PT. In addition, we do 2 hours a week with OT and he attends a playgroup for an hour every week. I have also incorporated a… read more
Hello, we've heard great things about the school districts in Irvine. My 5 year old daughter was diagnosed with moderate ASD. She's been in a special day class in San Leandro, CA and has been in every type of service since she was initially diagnosed (private OT, ABA, Speech and music therapy). The school has offered the basics, and not even OT! After sending letters she will finally have an assessment. She is transitioning to Kinder. At this point we are willing to move wherever services are… read more
I cannot help you with good schools in Irvine. But I can tell you. California has a lot of fantastic laws that protect parents, especially when it comes to getting records And most importantly all the… read more
Hi, I am also in California. My son is not yet school aged, but I was just hoping to offer some resources. Have you been in touch with Regional Centers? https://www.dds.ca.gov/rc/ That is where I… read more

My 2 yr old girl is diagnosed with autism. She regressed at 18months of age. Her development pediatration recommended to go for early intensive ABA therapy for 30 hrs a week. When I asked her about Speech and OT .She said OT is not required for this kid and speech will come with ABA. She is non verbal but babbles a lot with some meaningless words. Will they really start speaking with ABA therapy?
I was thinking ABA is only for behaviour!!
My child was also recommended 30 hours of ABA a week when she was diagnosed just before her 2nd birthday. The brain is more pliable when young. Yes, it is intense to go into that many hours of therapy… read more
I am in the process of trying to get my Health Insurance to cover ABA therapy for my 4 year old son. I know that they may not cover this type of therapy. What funding and/or scholarships are available to help cover this expense as I cannot afford to pay for it? Are there other alternatives to this type of therapy that will work as well? I live in the state of Ohio. Please advise. I am stressing out about this.
Sorry I've been gone for a while. Regional center is a government run program. They provide early intervention and testing for kids from birth until 3.
I know every child is different and so much depends on the teacher. Just curious what everyone's opinion on the subject is. Has anyone tried one or the other or both??
An Early Intervention therapist showed us how to use Floor time. We had a weekly session with an intern for a while after that. Our son played with doors. Floor time helped us turn it into a… read more
