A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

19 year old thought he was going to college but his dad had not followed through and he finds himself back in high school trying to get his GED, since his "special diploma" was for cleaning hospital cafeteria tables. most GP don't know much about autism. Most towns have mental health clinics that provide service either free or based on a sliding scale. Have you checked with his school? My son was actually diagnosed by his school psychologist. They administered an ADOS which is considered the "gold standard" of autism diagnosis tools. Since the school administered it, it was free.

He is also on a small dose of risperidone. His GP is not very knowledgeable about autism so maybe a visit to a psychiatrist is in order for a med review. Although, I'm having a hard time finding a therapist that accepts his insurance & accepts autistic adults! Been at this for hours, I need a drink...

sounds very similar to my son...angry, verbally and physically aggressive. My son was put on Risperidone and within days he stopped having the outbursts and now handles situations reasonably. He still gets angry and stuff but now it's within a normal range of emotions.
