We Are Considering Putting Our Daughter In PECS For Her Speech Delay But We Are Wondering If We Need ABA Also?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Our daughter does not have many tantrums but she also does not play with other kids. She doesn't seem to need a schedule. We are debating if we need ABA or not for her. She has been in ECI since she was 18 months. She will have music theropy, speech theropy-PECS, gymnastics and swimming over the summer and we will continue the OT tecniques we have learned. I just don't know if she needs more or not. She starts with the school district next year. Any advice?

The physical therapy and occupational therapy is so great I also used brain gym with my son. Most children with autism have under developed frontal lobes in their brains. Brain gym helps to cross the visual midline and turns the brain button on . The longer the brain button is on the better the
Neural connections become.

I live in TX and we have a place to take her. We actually switched roads again. We are hoping to do ABA a little later on. We found a functioning neurologist who has us doing exersices to strenghten the right side of her brain. We learned that kids with Autism usually have trouble with connection on that side of the brain. He evaluated her and showed us how she still has 5 of the 12 infant reflexes that are suppose to go away by age two. He has suggested correcting these connections before we do any therapy for catching up. We are taking the next two months to try. I have already seen improvement after a week.

Aba can be VERY expensive. not all insurance works with it. we were only able to because our place had funding depending on your income, but we had to move and now that we are back we are back on the waiting list. We are doing PECS right now and our In home trainer which is provided by our school district is helping us with that. However if you do not have that free option, there are ways around. Pecs is all about pictures that they are familiar with. You can either download boardmaker on your computer or simply print off pictures off the internet. For example,we have two laminated strips on our walls one for each boy and using velcro i attach each thing they are to do put up their backpack, eat, work, play, etc. I have a book for each where their choices are. On each laminated page are strips of velcro so that i can attach their choices for example they can choose what snack they want. They choose and I have them put that on the front of their notebook beside the picture of I want. their table has a strip that has picture for more, finished drink and their food option. If you want pictures of my setup my email is [[email: [[email: [[email: (Email address can only be seen by the question and answer creators)

We have not started PECS yet and I don't know if we can afford both. Should I go with ABA instead of PECS?
