How Do I Get My Son Medically Diagnosed?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son has been going to a school for speech therapy once a week for 30 minutes. They recently tested him for autism and said that medically they can't diagnose him autistic but that the test shows he is. I don't know where to begin to get him the help that he needs. I don't even know how to get him medically diagnosed to get him the help! Please help!!

Ask your pediatrician for a referral to a developmental pediatrician, pediatric neurologist, or a child psychiatrist. Any of those three are qualified to give a medical diagnosis of autism.

I would not waste my time with the standard Pedi or even a developmental one and go right to a neurologist because no matter what you are going to wait for an appointment so you might as well go with someone who will get the diagnosis correct. You can still get the developmental Pedi later on if you want it is not a bad idea, but since you have had an issue with a diagnosis already do not waste any more time than you have to.

Our primary was on the fence about the diagnosis and suggested the developmental, then we got the advice to go to the Neuro and it was the best thing we have done. No one every questions it even the schools and he was also able to get us going on meds the children needed that the primary was hesitant about.

Hi - I sympathize with you. My son who is five has been seeing a speech and OC therapist for over 2yrs and they still won't caution a diagnosis beyond PDD-NOS. I have considered requested that he be given a ASD specific diagnosis to get him more help! We have gone bankrupt paying his therapies. He's only now beginning to get help he really needs because his parents are divorcing. So now she falls in guidelines to get him what should have been available to begin with.

I wish you the best of luck!!!

What state do you live in? Texas is required to test any child from 3 yrs of age. Check your states requirement.

I asked his special ed teacher and she said to talk to my pediatrician.
No I don't live in Utah, I was born there, but I live in Texas! Thanks though!
Thank you evak77! I think I might ask my pedi first about what kind of help she can get for him and if I'm not satisfied then I will have to go another route. We live in a small town that doesn't have the best hospital in the world so we will probably go to another city that has better resources, like Dallas.
