I am trying to set up a 504 plan for my 6 year old, he goes to Speech, OT, Behavior/Social groups outside of school, he also has vision therapy outside of school as well. I am trying to set up for his vision processing, and auditory processing which is effecting his learning. What "goals" can they set up with a 504 plan. We had an IEP this year for social and speech, but he has "met his goals" and he doesn't qualify for an IEP. He is struggling in school academically but we cannot get that added… read more
504's are not for goals but for accommodations. If he already has an IEP it is time to revisit. They need to take out the mastered goals and add new goals to address the visual/auditory processing. Children are forever changing and we exited every child when they mastered an objective no one would have an IEP.
I agree this does not sound right to me. A 504 plan is only for access (think wheel chair ramps, large print texts, audio books, specific seating). IEP is for goals to allow students to gain from curriculum, accomedations (things in addition to general classroom things individual visual schedule, breaks, priming) or adaptions (less problems on worksheets, lower level participation/information..)
Call a meeting and ask for an evaluation for special education services. Call an advocate if needed, they can be very helpful.
I agree this does not sound right! I would contact an advocate. And also put a written request for him to be evaluated ASAP for special education services. 504 plans are not for goals, they are only for access (think ramps for wheelchairs, magnifying glasses for vision impaired, books on tape, could be specifying seating...ect). IEP do not need to have pull-out or special education classroom services, he can be serviced the gen ed class. an IEP should include accomedations (extra stuff ei visual schedule, equipment, breaks, visuals, etc) or adaptions (less problems per page, priming, alternative texts, ect).. GOOD LUCK
