Constant Hand Washing
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

my 6yr gd has been washing her hands a lot....she will play for awhile and then run off to wash her hands. She will also put her fingers in her mouth - like to clean them and then dry them on her clothes. She did this last summer also. Anyone experience these symptoms?

for a "quick" fix maybe let her keep a wet wipe in her pocket, it will dry out but maybe if replacement behavior of wiping will transfer to dry tissue or napkin or handkerchief. If not allow wet wipes (they do package individually) as a more socialy acceptable and less disruptive behavior.... It does sound a lot like OCD and you should talk to her doctor/s.

yes, my 3 yr old did it for a while. He also put his fingers in his mouth after washing his hands. It did turn out to be a phase. At first I could see that he was thirsty and wasn't drinking enough water. Then I think one day he put on too much soap on his hands that tasted nasty and that got him out of that habit. Also, we always said "ew, yucky, soap tastes yucky."
