A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have an adult Aspergers who is taking a little longer to get through college. He is 26 how do I get him his own health insurance without it costing me? His school is paid for by Voc Rehab

Some companies let parents keep adult children past 26 if they ate disabled and incapable of self support. You have to document big time, but it works. Some states have info on their health care exchanges courtesy of the Affordable Health Care Act. Open enrollment starts in Sept. You may want to check out www.coveredca.com to get a feel,of how things will work starting in 2014. God news there is insurance companies can't refuse applicants forvpre-existing condtions

Sometimes the college will have insurance that you can purchase (typically it covers using their health services and emergency services). You may want to contact his college directly and see what they offer.

What about getting him covered through Medicaid? Do you have any sort of case worker who could help you navigate the application process?
