Applying For Ssi With Little To No Documentation =(
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am a single parent of an autistic 3 year old who is a flight risk. Hes in need of all kinds of therapies that I cant afford. After lots of thought, I decided to try to get some help by applying for ssi. Only problem is, I have little to no documentation. The only thing I have is his screening results. Have any of you applied with little documents and got approved? Thanks in advance

They won't accept your documentation, they will request documentation directly from the diagnosing provider, so you just need her name and contact information for psychology at UVA. Should be fine.

Thank you for your answers. When I called social security they told me that I meet the income requirements. And my son got diagnosed by a pediatric psychologist at UVA. I think its a "legit" diagnoses. She sent me a letter with the details about his scores

The more you have the better, but the medical diagnosis is the most important. As long as that is solid and you meet the income requirements you should be fine. They may want an evaluation done, in our state it was early intervention, your state may call it something else, but because your child is to young for school it would have to come from an agency like that, or you Dr should be able to point you in the direction of a place in your area that can do it. It is not bad to have anyway even if you do not need if for SSI because it may come into play later with the school systems.

I can tell you my wife and I got a diagnosis from every specialist and Dr we saw because all that documentation came in handy later. I know it takes a lot of time and frustration to get everything but it is well worth it in the end.

Typically you will need a medical diagnosis from a M.D. I would ask your general pediatrician to make a referral to a pediatric neurologist or a pediatric psychiatrist.
