We've been doing biomedical for about 11 years and it's been well worth the effort. I do basics with dietary which I call "Nutritional support for dietary Intervention" which is a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables and meats or nuts and vitamin supplements.

I use a simple approach to metal chelation which is free of cost. We don't use any canned foods, we cook in glass cookware and don't use aluminum foil to wrap foods no canned pop (we don't drink pop normally but if we did it would be in the plastic container. - this greatly reduces the intake of metals which allows my son's body to be able to naturally chelate at the pace it is able to **(The human body naturally chelates metals on it's own but individuals with autism have an impaired system where it can't chelate as well as others can. So reducing the amount of ingested metals will help. (I can attest that metals do leach into foods from cans because I can taste metal in canned foods or pops. (I have high sensitivity to taste and smells). I would encourage anyone interested in biomedical and I would be glad to help with your research if you need info. Check my home page here in MyAutismTeam by clicking on my name and see how well my son is doing, I have pictures pinned of him.

Biomedical for us was a "God-send" I'm thankful everyday that we found answers to his needs. He's not cured but he's doing a lot better and I'm not stressed out anymore... ;)

Hyperactivity is a tough one to address with biomed. Aside from addressing yeast, the best thing was actually verbal behavior (ABA) and routines. Our son is a lot more hyperactive with us but not much with therapist or as much in preschool so there is definitely a self regulation / behavior component here. We are trying to avoid pharmaceuticals at the moment as well. From biomed research perspective, I would look into L-theanine, magnesium and melatonin for more calm, not GABA.

For the supplements that worked, we saw an improvement within 2 days to 1 month. But not everything that our biomedical dr has had us try has worked. Hyperactivity is something that we haven't been able to find a solution to yet. Nystatin helped with potty training but didn't make a difference with the hyperactivity. Increasing the Omega 3 dosage didn't make any difference in symptoms. Trying a low phenol diet actually made her even MORE hyper (fortunately that quickly reversed when we took her off it). Our dr. has brought up possibly trying propranolol down the line but that makes me a bit nervous since it is a pharmaceutical rather than nutritional support. We haven't yet tried meds except for the course of Nystatin.
