How Do Get Parent Training Added To The School's IEP Team Goals?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Do you have instructions in your child's IEP that the team will train you, as a parent, so you can carry out the same methods at home? How would you word it as an IEP goal suggestion?

when you go to your IEP they give you a handbook. like a policies and procedures. read that. and as you learn about something you don't know what it means..google it. once you start to look and find stuff, you find more places to get stuff to know. :-) I been doing this for nine years now and I think my life is more blessed with these babies now. they sure teach you about life, thats for sure!

I do not know how it is in the state or school district you are in but you can discuss it with your IEP team and have it added if they in fact agree with it, which is going to be the hard part. Second to that I may not want them teaching me what is and what isn't the best because sorry if I am sounding negative here but the schools districts are often more concerned about money than actually helping your child.

Don't get me wrong you are going to find teachers and para's that actually care about your child and want to help them but they are ultimately under the control of the higher ups that see budget figures. I would ask the teachers if you trust them to give you pointers, but I would also seek out outside agencies your state has, or programs and classes that get offered in your area throughout the year, because they have no agendas and will actually help you.

Our state has an agency called DSS department of developmental services and they have people come in a few times a year to speak to parents about all sorts of issues, from ABA, to legal advise you just have to ask your case worker, who you get assigned to let you know when they are going on. Our case worker is great and sends us emails whenever there sorts of things are offered, and also any programs the kids would enjoy like bowling days, swimming, arts and crafts, and various other fun activities.

I say this a lot but you have to do this on your own and find things yourself by contacting agencies and doing research because unless you know someone who is dealing with this as well you are not going to be handed instructions on what to do and where to go for help.
