I am curious about how other parents feel about how often and/or for how long their child gets to have "free play", "breaks", "sensory breaks/time" ect built into their schedule at school?
My daughter also has items on her desk area to help her when she gets stressed but the quiet room is when she's out of control.
My daughter has items at her desk that she can use any time she needs them. Im all for it as they help to calm her down when she gets too stressed out. Sensory is very important for her. There are no scheduled break times for this since she can use the item while she works.
She has velcro strips inside her desk, a squeezy ball and straws that she'll sometimes chew on. I usually send a crunchy snack with her as well. She doesn't have to use these items every day but they're there if she needs them.
I feel I am in the minority because I don't want my son getting all kinds of "breaks" sensory or otherwise I want him to learn there are things that have to get done. It bugs me that "sensory" is a section on his point sheet from school, I mean seriously could he do bad at sensory play? Anyway I know sensory input seems to work for some kids, just thinking it is more of an escape option for my son..
I'm very lucky that my daughter gets as many sensory breaks as she needs. My daughter has her own quiet room in the school with everything an autistic child needs. The educational assistant knows my daughter so well and that also makes it much easier for my daughter. If my daughter requires to be in the quiet room all day then it wouldn't be questioned. Her school is amazing to us and especially my daughter.
