Does your child get ABA? Have you tried a reward based system. My daughter had a hard time at first but they started with PECS and gave her a reward when she pointed to something. After she responded to that they started signing and did it the same way. Now most of the time she signs and vocalizes at the same time for the most common things she knows and the more complex she uses her PECS book. They are going to start with an IPod soon but they are taking it slow.

The key is to start slow and take small steps and reward them when they do well
