My son is going to be 7 in less than 2 months. He was Dx at 6 with Aspergers, a little more than a year ago. He was also Dx with fine & gross motor delays and attention issues. I've spoken with his Neurodevelopmental Pediatrician, and she said I could follow through with a neurologist, but she doesn't like to diagnose this young. I've spoken to friends with dual diagnoses (older than my son, yes) and how much it's helped them. Just wondering if there were any other perspectives out there...
Many pediatrician a can dx ADHD. Before 7. Do you have an adhd treatment center or just look up pediatrician and adhd and you should be able to get the additional dx. My daughter I believe had asd with ADHD symptoms that mask her asd. I am wondering how you would the dx would help with more services if you already have the current dx s. Hope we both get answers! Wishing you luck!!
My son was diagnosed with asd and adhd at 5 by a behavioral and developmental pediatrician.
How did you go about figuring out what to look into? Our Ear, Nose and Throat Dr has us off obvious dairy and soy to see if that reduces our allergies (lots of seasonal allergies, not so much hives or eczema. Still puffy dark eyes, though). My mom is sensitive to food additives and preservatives, and spent 3years in the 80s living with daily "hangovers" she couldn't solve until 3people died one year because the BHT they would spray on salad bars gave them fatal asthma attacks. Then she started to investigate that. I'm overwhelmed by the task of figuring out what to pursue, and how we're going to handle it.
I'm not looking for meds yet, just input as to what's really going on. His diet is good but there's always room for improvement. We don't eat a lot of processed foods, except he's been loving cold cuts for lunch. I'm honestly overwhelmed by what we should look at first, diet and therapy-wise. Thank you for the Epsom salt suggestion.
My son was 5. Getting a Dx and subsequent medication was our last resort. We already knew he would get the Dx, but we had put it off as long as we possibly could.
If you really think a diagnosis would be beneficial, find another doctor. Some may or may not give a dual diagnosis with ASD because in the old DSM 4 it wasn't proper diagnostic procedure to have both.
Now in the new DSM, it is recognized that indeed ASD can co-occur with ADHD.
@A MyAutismTeam Member I am curious what they would expect to see if it had been ADHD? Did they say?
