Would educating classmates or group members help my child to fit in better?
Yes my daughter did a presentation on Autism at our church, she did a lot of research and invited my grandson teacher, she also had a slideshow to show some statics. We also had an light gluten lunch and invited a drum line that consist of about ten autistic boys and it was great.
Yes. I go into my son's school class every year (he's currently 9) and give a presentation about autism in a way that really engages the children and helps them understand autism. (fun visual aids, stories, relate sensory issues to superhero powers,, etc.). I also tell them what to expect from my son and his aide, and what they can do to help out. I've done the same presentation for the children at church and adults and children at family reunions. I find that once the other kids understand it and their curious questions are answered they are accepting and kind to my child. I've also had many adults thank me for the insight. They want to help but don't know how and this really gives them some direction. Knowledge is power!
