Do You Need An Appointment To Visit Your Child's School?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

Today my son's teacher said there is a new policy that parents need an appointment to visit school. This is my son's third school year at this school. In the past, parents were welcome to drop in at anytime to observe. This year we have a new principal though. Does anyone else have a child whose school has an appointment-only visit policy? My husband and I think this is unacceptable and a bit ridiculous. Our child does not have the verbal skills to tell us what's happening at school. We have to… read more

Learn your rights people!!!! According to the I.D.E.A. you have the right to walk into your child's classroom anytime u see fit. They cannot force you to make an appt. ahead of time.

I had a former principal try to tell me I couldn't and I told her exactly what the law was and asked her what she was trying to hide from me..... She backed down quickly. If u have a special needs student u have total access to their classroom.

@A MyAutismTeam Member You can ask your paraprof be present during the IEP. They cannot deny your petition because the paraprof is the person in the school that know more than anyone else. Just ask them in advance so the administrators have the time to call a substitute. It is your right.

@A MyAutismTeam Member, I apologize if appears twice, when I went back to check the post it was not there. It is absolutely dedplorable and illegal for the school to tell you that you cannot bring someone with you to the IEP. You need to go to the superintendent of youyr district school system, and please take someone with you, hopefully an education advocate, a friend who might have been a teacher. When they see it's just one of you, they know they can say anything they want. It does not look like your daughter is getting services she so desperately needs. The only thing that will serve the best interest of your child is not a "handbook of rules' but an IEP meeting with anyone you want to bring.they have no right to tell you who you can bring.Pastord 73 above is right on the ball.-with both of his answers. You should also go to the superintendent of your school district; yes, for that I think you would need an appointment. don't be afraid of the school"team" or the superintendent. Also go to the "FIND PARENTS" tab above, make a short summary of your issues and ask for help-=although I see here, you have had some really good answers, some not so much. Don't know what town you live in, but do all you can do and aske questions, and hopefully you will meet someoone who can help you and your daughter. Just added you to my team. I can give u my mail but I have to find out how do to that and make it private Hugs and prayers!

@ JessicaPanozzoRich you have the right to invite and have anyone attend you want. if they can't make it reschedule it. you have this right. I have had theapists at my child's and they dont work with or for the school this was when he was in public school last yr. i have also had a advocate as well . and that is for both older kids.
