Are Charter Schools Better Than Public Schools For Children That Are On The Spectrum?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son will be entering high school next year, I am considering a charter school instead. The high schools here are massive and give him anxiety just stepping onto the grounds. Any advise is most helpful.

You have to do what you feel is best as a parent. If you have the time and patients to deal with the charter school and you feel like it is an opportunity for your child, go for it. The High school will always be there and the charter schools are run by lottery. I passed up a charter school in our state that was for autistic kids, but I heard from professionals that were working with some of the kids in the school that the more behaviors they have to work with the less patient they were and I passed not only once but three times my child came up on the lottery, but it's just because I know my child and I chose to home school instead. Don't be afraid to try it if you have the time a patience and don't be discouraged. An opportunity is an opportunity.

Thank you @A MyAutismTeam Member. My son will be attending a regular high school, none of the charter schools (like you said before) offer special education, but I have his case manager from the middle school helping me out to help make the transition for him a bit easier. So thank you for your help- I so needed it :)

Thank you @A MyAutismTeam Member. I appreciate the feedback. I will see if I can follow up with his new high school and see what they can do for him.

Of course it depends on the child and how "high functioning" but generally speaking charter schools do not receive the funding for special ed. that the public schools receive. There are a few charter schools that are specifically for autistic children but if it is a regular charter school you can expect that if your child has any severe behaviors they will call you to come pick them up and that can be can be stressful.
